Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Working? Troubleshooting Tips

Is your Sub-Zero ice maker not producing ice, making small cubes, or creating cloudy ice? These are among the most common service calls we get from Lincoln Park homeowners, and sometimes the fix is simpler than you think.

No Ice Production

Start with the basics. Is the ice maker turned on? Check the control panel or the on/off switch on the ice maker itself. Next, verify the water supply. The water valve behind or below the unit should be fully open. Check that the water line is not kinked or frozen. If you recently replaced the water filter, make sure it was installed correctly -- an improperly seated filter can block water flow.

Small or Misshapen Cubes

Small cubes usually indicate low water pressure or a partially clogged water line. Check that other water fixtures in your kitchen have normal pressure. If pressure is fine elsewhere, the issue is likely in the water line to the refrigerator or the inlet valve. A clogged water filter can also restrict flow enough to produce small cubes.

Cloudy Ice

Cloudy ice is caused by dissolved minerals and air trapped in the water during freezing. If you have not replaced your water filter recently, start there. Fresh filters remove more minerals and improve ice clarity. If new filters do not help, the issue may be with the freezing process itself -- slow freezing due to temperature problems produces cloudier ice.

Ice Tastes or Smells Off

Old ice absorbs odors from the freezer. If your ice tastes off, empty the bin completely and clean it with mild soap and warm water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. Also check the water filter age. Replace the filter and run two to three batches of ice before consuming.

Ice Maker Overflows or Leaks

If ice cubes are forming but water is also leaking, the inlet valve may not be shutting off completely. This is usually a valve issue that needs professional repair. In the meantime, you can turn off the water supply to the ice maker to prevent water damage.

When to Call for Service

If basic troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, the problem likely involves the inlet valve, the ice maker motor module, the thermostat, or the electronic control board. These components need professional diagnosis and repair. Attempting DIY repairs on these parts can cause additional damage or void any remaining warranty coverage.
